Presidents' Letter

I am delighted and excited to become President of the London Medieval Society. In 2007/08 we aim to continue the tradition of meetings that engage with new topics in medieval studies in a forum that is friendly, diverse and inclusive. The forthcoming year promises to be most interesting: the November meeting addresses the many issues around Masculinity following last year’s discussions of Femininity; in February 2008 we will signal the growing interest by medievalists in Music and Liturgy; and our Spring Meeting will, as ever, offer a cornucopia of papers from doctoral students. We will also aim to keep members abreast ofevents in London of particular interest for medievalists.

This autumn sees a change of venue too. The institutions that have so generously supported us over the years by offering space for meetings can, alas, no longer do so. After some anxious moments over the summer I am delighted to introduce you to the Society’s new meeting place: the Lock-keeper’s Cottage – a very attractive restored building overlooking the Regent’s Canal - on the Queen Mary Campus. We will provide you with an electronic map of the site and look forward to welcoming you there in November.

Above all, I hope you will enjoy being part of the London Medieval Society and that you will offer ideas for future meetings, contribute papers, take part in discussions and tell your friends about the LMS’s activities. The Committee members and I will be delighted to hear from you and we look forward to seeing you again in November or indeed to welcoming you as a new member!
